Job Overview

Unitrans is seeking a skilled and experienced Master Driver to join its Petroleum business unit in Secunda, Mpumalanga. This permanent position is focused on preparing new drivers for operational duties by providing practical training, mentoring, site-specific guidance, and ongoing performance support.

The Master Driver will play an important role in ensuring that drivers are properly equipped with the practical skills, operational knowledge, and safety awareness required to perform their duties effectively. The position is particularly focused on requirements established through Unitrans’ contracts with its customers, meaning training must be aligned with specific site, route, vehicle, product, regulatory, and customer requirements.

This role would suit an experienced professional driver who has strong operational knowledge and enjoys training, coaching, and mentoring other drivers. The successful candidate will work closely with operational teams and SHERQ to support safe and compliant transportation activities.

The Master Driver will also use available performance information, including telematics and DriveCam data, to identify areas where drivers may need additional coaching. Through practical guidance and performance feedback, the role contributes to safer driving, improved fuel efficiency, stronger compliance, and consistent operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting practical job-readiness training and coaching for new drivers.
  • Assessing drivers and mentoring them to ensure they are ready for operational duties.
  • Providing site-specific training and guidance.
  • Supporting new drivers during deliveries to unfamiliar sites.
  • Training drivers on route-specific challenges and operational requirements.
  • Conducting contract-specific training covering vehicle and product handling.
  • Ensuring drivers understand relevant regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Working alongside SHERQ on site and route assessments.
  • Providing operational input during incident and accident investigations.
  • Helping identify root causes and supporting corrective actions.
  • Monitoring driver certification and job-specific safety compliance.
  • Submitting regular coaching and training reports to the Contract or Depot Manager.
  • Using telematics and DriveCam information to support driver performance coaching.
  • Coaching drivers on safe driving, fuel efficiency, and operational performance.
  • Providing feedback based on performance data to improve driver competency.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric / NQF Level 4 minimum qualification.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a similar training role.
  • Proven professional driving experience.
  • Strong operational knowledge and understanding of professional driving requirements.
  • Previous driver training or mentoring experience is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality standards.
