Purpose of the Role
The Shop Assistant is responsible for providing outstanding customer service while supporting the store in achieving operational and sales objectives. The role includes assisting customers, managing stock, maintaining merchandising standards, operating the point-of-sale system, and ensuring the store remains clean, organised, and visually appealing.
Key Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be expected to:
- Deliver exceptional customer service at all times.
- Create a welcoming and personalised shopping experience.
- Help the store achieve sales and operational targets.
- Understand daily sales targets and contribute towards meeting them.
- Promote average basket value through upselling and link selling.
- Attend daily morning meetings and floor walks.
- Raise any operational concerns with the Store Supervisor.
- Participate in scheduled stock takes.
- Conduct cycle counts when required.
- Report stock shortages or damaged stock.
- Ensure stock is stored correctly and follows FIFO (First-In, First-Out) principles.
- Keep sales floor and stockroom clean and organised.
- Replenish shelves and maintain product displays.
- Maintain visual merchandising standards.
- Follow all company operating procedures and policies.
- Adhere to cash handling, banking, and Point of Sale procedures.
- Offer customers Signature Cosmetics Loyalty Card membership.
- Explain promotions, discounts, and special offers to customers.
- Introduce customers to products using testers where appropriate.
- Perform professional makeovers and record customer information according to company procedures.
- Respond professionally to customer queries and complaints.
- Escalate unresolved issues to the Store Supervisor.
- Support in-store marketing activities including promotions, sidewalk sales, pop-up stores, and centre court displays.
- Assist with ordering stationery, cleaning materials, and store consumables.
- Follow staff schedules and support colleagues using the buddy system.
- Attend all scheduled training sessions.
- Assist with the induction and training of new employees.
- Report any policy breaches or operational concerns through the appropriate reporting channels.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of one year’s retail experience.
- Experience in beauty, skincare, fragrances, or cosmetics will be an advantage.
- Experience using Point of Sale (POS) systems is advantageous.
- Basic Microsoft Office knowledge, including email and Excel, will be beneficial.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Willingness to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays where required.
