The General Worker will be responsible for removing debris, cane residue, mud, spills, waste, and other hazards that could affect employees, vehicles, and equipment. By keeping high-traffic areas clean and unobstructed, the role contributes to safer working conditions and smoother day-to-day operations.
This position is physically demanding and requires someone who is reliable, safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and comfortable performing repetitive manual tasks. Candidates should be prepared to work both indoors and outdoors and may be required to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and during peak harvest periods.
Key Responsibilities
The General Worker will be responsible for:
- Cleaning operational areas including loading zones, workshops, offices, and ablution facilities.
- Removing cane residue, mud, leaves, dust, oil spills, and other debris.
- Cleaning workshop floors, benches, tools, waste areas, and storage sections.
- Keeping walkways, ramps, platforms, and machinery access points clean and unobstructed.
- Maintaining fuel stations, wash bays, parking areas, and storage yards.
- Collecting and disposing of waste according to site waste-separation procedures.
- Emptying bins, replacing liners, and preventing waste-area overflow.
- Transporting waste to designated disposal areas.
- Supporting recycling and the correct disposal of contaminated materials.
- Following company safety, housekeeping, and PPE requirements.
- Identifying and reporting hazards such as spills, broken glass, damaged flooring, and unsafe storage.
- Using warning signs when cleaning operational areas.
- Using cleaning chemicals correctly and storing them safely.
- Communicating cleaning priorities with the Supervisor.
- Coordinating safely with technicians, drivers, and equipment operators.
- Maintaining cleaning equipment and reporting faults.
- Completing daily cleaning checklists and housekeeping records.
- Reporting spills, hazards, incidents, and equipment problems promptly.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should have:
- Grade 10–12, with Grade 12 preferred.
- 1–2 years’ cleaning experience in an industrial, agricultural, or logistics environment.
- Experience working around heavy equipment or high-traffic operational areas is advantageous.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and industrial waste handling.
- Basic cleaning or safety training is advantageous.
- The ability to use cleaning tools and light equipment such as mops, vacuums, pressure washers, and industrial brushes.
- An understanding of safety practices when working around heavy machinery.
- Knowledge of safe spill-cleaning and waste-handling procedures.
Skills and Competencies
The ideal candidate should have strong safety awareness, reliability, discipline, and attention to detail. Good communication and teamwork skills are important, particularly when working around machinery, drivers, technicians, and supervisors.
You should be physically fit and able to perform manual and repetitive tasks involving bending, lifting, walking, and prolonged standing. The ability to work independently while following safety procedures is also essential.
Working Conditions
The role involves working indoors and outdoors, with possible exposure to dust, mud, cane debris, noise, and changing weather conditions. Employees may work near moving trucks, tractors, loaders, and harvesters and will be required to wear appropriate PPE such as safety boots, gloves, and reflective vests.
Candidates must be prepared for shifts, weekends, public holidays, and peak operational periods.
