About the Position

The General Worker plays an important role in maintaining cleanliness and safe working conditions throughout sugar cane logistics operations.

The role involves cleaning operational areas such as harvesting zones, workshops, machine yards, loading areas, offices, stores, and ablution facilities. Keeping these areas clean helps improve operational efficiency, reduces safety risks, and supports the movement of heavy equipment including tractors, loaders, haulage trucks, and mechanical harvesters.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of housekeeping and operational support duties, including:

Cleaning and Housekeeping
  • Clean loading zones, workshops, offices, stores, and ablution facilities.
  • Remove sugar cane residue, mud, dust, leaves, oil spills, and debris.
  • Maintain clean workshop floors, workbenches, and storage areas.
  • Ensure access routes, walkways, and machinery areas remain free from obstructions.
  • Clean fuel stations, wash bays, parking areas, and storage yards.

Waste Management
  • Collect and dispose of waste according to site procedures.
  • Separate organic, scrap metal, and general waste.
  • Empty waste bins and replace liners.
  • Transport waste to designated disposal areas.
  • Support recycling and proper disposal of contaminated materials.
Health and Safety
  • Follow all company health and safety procedures.
  • Wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Keep floors and walkways clean and free from slip or trip hazards.
  • Report unsafe conditions, damaged flooring, spills, or hazards immediately.
  • Use cleaning chemicals safely and according to workplace procedures.
  • Display safety warning signs where necessary during cleaning activities.
Communication and Teamwork
  • Work closely with supervisors to prioritise cleaning activities.
  • Coordinate with workshop staff, equipment operators, and drivers to clean work areas safely.
  • Report shortages of cleaning materials.
  • Attend daily operational and safety briefings.
Equipment Maintenance
  • Properly use cleaning equipment such as:
    • Brooms
    • Pressure washers
    • Mops
    • Vacuum cleaners
    • Industrial brushes
  • Maintain cleaning equipment in good condition.
  • Report faulty equipment immediately.
  • Store cleaning materials safely and correctly.
Reporting
  • Complete daily housekeeping checklists.
  • Record completed cleaning tasks.
  • Report hazards, incidents, or spills without delay.
  • Assist during housekeeping and safety inspections.
Minimum Requirements

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

Education
  • Grade 10 to Grade 12 (Grade 12 preferred)
Experience
  • One to two years of cleaning experience in an industrial, logistics, or agricultural environment.
  • Experience working around heavy machinery will be advantageous.
  • Basic cleaning or workplace safety training is beneficial.
