Requirements
Applicants must have an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Worker and must have current SACSSP registration for 2026.
Other requirements include:
Computer literacy
Valid South African driver’s licence
No experience required
Knowledge of social work and social welfare legislation
Good counselling and communication skills
Planning and organisational abilities
Problem-solving and time-management skills
Conflict and stress-management skills
Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
Experience or exposure to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) will be an added advantage. Internship or practicum experience in a healthcare setting such as a hospital or Primary Health Care facility will also be advantageous.
Preference will be given to current CHBAH COVID staff.
Duties
The successful candidates will provide social work services to vulnerable individuals, families, groups and communities. Duties will include providing care, support, protection and development services, addressing matters that may contribute to social instability, and working within relevant social work programmes.
The Social Worker will also be expected to:
• Keep up to date with developments in social work and social welfare
• Study professional journals and publications
• Monitor relevant legislation and policies
• Participate in continuous professional development
• Complete required administrative duties
• Work in different areas of the hospital, including the Psychiatric Unit, according to the rotation cycle or allocation
