Job Overview
Woolworths is looking for a Customer Assistant: Tills — Limited Period Employment (LPE) to join its retail team in Hilton, Pietermaritzburg. This is a part-time opportunity suited to someone who enjoys working with people, has good communication skills, and can provide friendly and professional customer service in a busy retail environment.
The Customer Assistant will work primarily at the store tills and will be responsible for assisting customers throughout the payment process. This includes greeting customers, accurately processing different payment methods, handling till transactions, and ensuring that customers receive a positive shopping experience.
The position also involves promoting Woolworths loyalty programmes and additional services, including utility bill payments and airtime sales. Candidates therefore need basic selling skills and enough product and service knowledge to confidently assist customers.
Because tills can become particularly busy during peak shopping periods, the successful candidate must be able to remain calm under pressure, work efficiently, and maintain accuracy while serving multiple customers. Attention to detail is particularly important because the role involves processing payments and ensuring that prices scanned at the till correspond with the relevant shelf prices.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service
A major part of the role is providing excellent customer service at the tills. The Customer Assistant will be expected to greet customers warmly and create a friendly and professional experience from the moment they reach the till.
The successful candidate should be approachable, respectful and customer-focused. They must be able to communicate clearly with different customers and assist with basic questions or concerns during the checkout process.
Till Operations and Transactions
The Customer Assistant will be responsible for accurately processing customer transactions according to Woolworths procedures and policies.

These services may include:

Loss Prevention and Shrinkage
The Customer Assistant will contribute towards minimising stock losses and shrinkage by following Woolworths’ loss prevention procedures.
Employees are expected to remain alert to irregularities and report suspicious activity or other concerns through the appropriate channels. Employees must also comply with company requirements relating to dress code, attendance and punctuality.
