Macsteel Tube & Pipe at Macsteel City, Elandsfontein, is looking for a skilled and safety-conscious Crane Driver to join its production team.
The successful candidate will operate an overhead travelling crane to safely and efficiently move bundles of tubes and pipes from the storage conveyor onto trailers.
The position requires someone who is physically fit, able to work independently and has strong coordination skills. The successful candidate will also assist the bundling operator and tube maker during production changeovers.
Safety is a key priority, and the successful candidate must consistently follow safe working procedures in a fast-paced production environment.
The Crane Driver will be responsible for:
- Ensuring the overhead travelling crane is in good working condition.
- Checking all lifting equipment and slings before use.
- Ensuring lifting equipment remains in good condition.
- Visually inspecting pipe and tube ends for burrs.
- Checking that labels are securely attached to each bundle.
- Ensuring sufficient trailers are available for loading.
- Ensuring trailers are positioned close to the storage conveyor where possible.
- Checking that straps on bundles are secure.
- Offloading bundles from the storage conveyor in a timely manner.
- Ensuring the bundling process is not interrupted due to delays in offloading.
- Arranging for a forklift to remove and load bundles if the crane breaks down.
- Ensuring production continues during crane breakdowns where possible.
- Ensuring full trailers are removed and replaced with empty trailers by the Distribution Centre.
- Completing crane and lifting equipment logbooks daily.
- Keeping all required documentation up to date.
- Assisting the bundling operator with setting up the bundling process during changeovers.
- Assisting with general housekeeping in the production area.
- Assisting the Tube Maker with mill changeovers.
Safety is an essential part of this position.
The successful candidate must:
- Work safely at all times.
- Follow the principle of stop, think, plan and do.
- Operate lifting equipment responsibly.
- Ensure loads are handled carefully.
- Use the crane siren when transporting bundles to alert people nearby.
- Prevent bundles from being damaged during transportation.
- Take particular care when moving bundles near trailer uprights.
- Ensure lifting equipment and slings are inspected regularly.
- Report equipment problems or safety concerns immediately.
- Maintain the crane and remote control in good working condition.
The Crane Driver will also be responsible for:
- Keeping the crane remote control in good working order.
- Ensuring remote-control batteries are replaced when necessary.
- Checking lifting equipment and slings before use.
- Reporting damaged or defective equipment.
- Completing daily equipment logbooks accurately.
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / National Certificate.
- Ability to read, write and speak English.
- A valid Crane Licence.
- Proof of crane certification.
- Proven experience operating an overhead travelling crane.
- Proven ability to perform slinging.
- Strong hand-eye coordination.
- Good physical dexterity.
- Ability to remain on your feet for extended periods.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

- Helping prevent unnecessary production delays.
